The Aims and Standards Expected

The aims of our course go beyond Subject Knowledge Enhancement

  • To audit subject knowledge
  • To improve knowledge and understanding of religion and worldviews in order to be able to teach GCSE
  • To consider the purpose and aims of religious education in the 21st century
  • To consider some different approaches to teaching religious education
  • To foster engagement with members of religion and worldview communities
  • To promote interaction with the professional religious education community thus supporting on-going learning opportunities beyond ITT

Our course not only equips trainees with a deeper and broader understanding of religion and worldviews but welcomes them into the RE Professional Community by giving them free NATRE membership for a year and providing them with resources to support their classroom practice early in their career.

The standards expected on our course

Trainees progress will be mapped against the Teacher Standards, in particular the following standards:

    • Have secure knowledge of the relevant subject and curriculum areas, foster and maintain pupils ‘interest in the subject and address misunderstandings
    • Demonstrate a critical understanding of developments in the subject and curriculum areas, and promote the value of scholarship
    • Demonstrate an understanding of and take responsibility for promoting high standards of literacy, articulacy and the correct use of standard English, whatever the teachers’ specialist subject
    • Take responsibility for improving teaching through appropriate professional development, responding to advice and feedback from colleagues

Trainees modules are assessed using the Higher Education Credit Framework 2008. Trainees module work is assessed as pass, merit and distinction.

A trainee’s certificate will show whether they have made sufficient progress against the specific Teacher Standards in relation to subject knowledge, and also indicate whether they have completed the course at an overall pass, merit or distinction standard.

Course length

The course is 200 hours. It can be taken over 8 weeks (25 hours per week), or 16 weeks (12.5 hours a week). With an ITT provider’s agreement the course may be taken over a longer period of time.

We advise that you take the full time option if you are between jobs or are working part time. We do not advise taking the course full time if you are completing a degree or have a paid full time job.

We advise that you take the part time option if you have plenty of time before your ITT course begins. We advise those who have full time paid work or who are in the final year of their degree to opt for this part time option.

When can I start?

You can begin the course at any time depending on the conditions set by your ITT provider. Your ITT provider may have specified a particular date they wish you to begin so we advise checking with them first. We do not advise undertaking this course through your ITT year. Therefore our proposed latest registration date to begin our SKE programme for September 2020 entry to ITT is 17th August 2020.
